What is Saxenda®?
Saxenda®, dubbed the “The Skinny Pen”, is an FDA and MHRA approved prescription injectable medicine, that when supplemented with a well balanced diet and exercise, will help some adults lose excess weight. The active drug in Saxenda® is liraglutide.
How Does Saxenda® Work?
Saxenda® (liraglutide) belongs to a group of medicines called glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 agonist). Saxenda® works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreasing too much glucagon release. This mimics hormones already present in the body and tricks your brain into thinking your are full or satiated.

Saxenda® Dosage
The starting dosage is 0.6 mg per day for 1 week. You should increase the dose each week until the dose of 3 mg is reached, as prescribed. Each pen contains 3ml at 6mg/ml

The dosing schedule is designed to help minimise gastrointestinal side effects. Each pen contains 3ml of liraglutide, meaning your first pen will be enough to complete the initial dose, 0.6mg per day, for one week, with 13.8mg remaining remaining in the pen, for all of the week 2 dosing regimen and part of the week 3 dosing regimen.
How Long Does Saxenda® Take to Work?
The time taken for Saxenda® to start working is largely dependent on the individual. If you supplement your dosage with moderate to intense daily exercise (30-6o minutes) and a well balanced lower calorie diet, then you will likely see results quicker than if you did no exercise and continued on a similar diet.
You should only continue using Saxenda® if you have lost at least 5% of your initial body weightafter 12 weeks on the 3 mg/day dose. Consult your doctor before you continue if you have not lost as much weight.
